Mobile Device as the Everything Hub (10 Trends for 2009): Mobile phones are truly an “everything hub” as more things get more digital or even connected many people take to the smaller screen to watch videos, spend, shop, track their health, learn, play and more. 

Going Private in Public (10 Trends for 2013): With privacy increasingly elusive, people are struggling with how to maintain a vibrant digital identity. 
It's hard as well with the fear of internet fraud too, so most people have to be fully aware of what could / might happen.

Pinterest

On my Pinterest I like to pin quite a lot of things this ranging from Art, Design, Art References, Book Design, UI, and many more.

I really like to use Pinterest, especially within our Universities projects. I feel like it opens up many opportunities and you can find some great resources on it. I especially like seeing magazine, book, website, and artwork on there. My passion is seeing typography too. I cannot help but spend hours trawling through Pinterest. It's such an easy way to spend 1-2 hours a night on.

It doesn't even feel like you've been on it for hours. It really only feels like 10 minutes, which is why I really like to use Pinterest.

For this project I wanted to look closely, on Design and Typography as if I was going to create Infographics, I believe that I would need the right font. So with that I took to Pinterest and had a gander at there very beautiful creations. I also looked at Mental Health Infographics and based mine off of what I saw.





TypeToken

I really love visiting this website regularly, it makes me happy to see a variety of beautiful design books. On their website, under the about setting it describes them as:

Typetoken is a new and online magazine that asks you to join with them on a journey into a symbolic world of typography. 
There website showcases, discuses, and even reviews the world of typography, the icons and even the visual language.

Typetoken has been a collaboration between two graphic designers, and these are Mike Sullivan of Mister and Frank Milic of Modularlab.
Also, a web developer came into the mix, and this of David Cole of Mayfrield Digital.

Typetoken also features contributions from designers around the globe, and aims to be a source of inspiration to new and upcoming designers. 

I cannot even remember how I stumbled upon this glorious website however, I am really glad that I did. I love typography and books, and the two on this website mix really, really well.

It's very interesting to see very beautiful, designed book that look so interesting and colourful.
I thought that this would help in my project for the idea on how to make my typography stand out, like really pop and make the audience want to look at my animation, or my infographic posters. 


Fubiz Media

Fubiz is a really interesting website, it holds what I feel is a very unique way of handling loads of design in one little website. However, this is not little, it feels like a huge website and can hold so much information and still be beautiful.

The way that everything it laid out is very interesting too, they have split the sections up into various categories like that of: Photography, Design, Pop Culture, Video, Technology, Graphic, Stories and More.

I looked at this website to help get my creative mind into focus whilst thinking of the project at hand, I just wanted to see some interesting design that made me think wow, that's amazing. 
I spent a few hours trawling through this impeccable website looking for hints as to what I could create for this piece of work. 

I also, think that their website is spot on. I love how interactive that the website is. I feel that you need some more of interactivity on a website, these days to get people more engaged and not want to leave your site as soon as they enter it. 


Colours of Pottermore

I am a HUGE fan of Harry Potter, and the website 'Pottermore' came a good year or so after the very last Potter movie. However, now they have decided that they needed a new website for Pottermore and have currently changed the whole layout of the old one.

The new website does look very visually stunning. It looks way more designed and again, visually stunning.

However, this particular page is dedicated to the 'Colours of Pottermore' - I found this on the new website and I was amazed that they would even have put this onto the website! I was in awe when they put the colours to each character, location etc..

On the website is states by a designer who helped on the website:
"‘Obviously we had the books and films as incredible, rich references,’ Johanna tells us, ‘but it wasn’t always as easy as that. We made our decisions on colour by asking ourselves a series of questions, essentially a giant flow chart.

‘We realised pretty early on that some characters had an obvious colour. Some had many colours you could attribute to them and some had nothing distinguishable about them, or were featured too little in the books and films to have a colour specifically for them. By asking questions in levels we could arrive at a colour that was most relevant.

‘For example, the first question was: ‘Has it been described by J.K. Rowling either in the books or on pottermore.com?’ If the answer was yes, then the specific colour is attributed. If the answer was no, we went on to ask: ‘Is it a material? Does it have a distinguishable character? Is it in a group? Does it have House allegiance?’ Each of these answers led to a range of colours we had created.’
The priority, as always, was to stay true to J.K. Rowling’s vision."

I like that they used flow-charts to help get right through to the heart of choosing a specific colour to a character. It seems like it would be so easy like Bellatrix LeStrange should be green, however what style of green? What hue? Dark or Light? There's so many choices just a simple colour now so I believe it must've taken a while to get the correct outcomes.










Adventure time; The Art of OOO

I purchased this book in the comic book shop in Queensgate Market in Huddersfield. I'm quite a regular in that shop and I kept eyeing up this amazing book and thought I'll buy it, however I never did. Then eventually I finally decided that I was going to purchase this amazing book.

I love Adventure Time, it's such a humorous programme, however even though this programme is on Cartoon Network, it really does not belong on there from my perspective. This programme I believe is for teens and young adults. It is really not for children again, but that it my opinion. 

I didn't realise that this book would come in handy with Jay's lessons. For him we have to create characters for a cereal, I started remembering that this book could help me with the drawings I needed to produce for them workshops. 

With this book, it shows how each character of Adventure Time, from Princess Bubblegum, Marceline, Finn, Jake and Peppermint Butler to many more. It's a very widespread book. It contains so much art content and text it's truly awe inspiring. 





My Design Books

"It’s nice that 2014 annual" ; This book is immaculate and perfect. It has many design elements, I love the book I love the way that it has been created. The cover is blue, which is rather different. Also so are the pages they are blue. IT’s a very blue book however I think it’s great. My brother got me this book for Christmas I believe, as he knew I was really into design. They have different editions of this book all having a postcard in the front by a designer / illustrator and photography I think.

Mine is from Gwendal Le Bec, and it’s an illustration of shoes / trainers. Some of the pages actually in the book are either blue or white which I think has a nice feel towards it. I would really recommend this book to other aspiring designers. It’s beautifully put and is a well bound book. The It’s Nice That Annual is really one of my favourites.


Wild Art by Phaidon
This book was another that I had received for Christmas, this actually was the first design book that my brother ever bought me. I remember being upset at Christmas thinking why on Earth did my brother waste his money buying me this. However, I truly love it. It’s a great design / art book. It’s a really thick book too and I remember just reading through and looking at all the pages in this book thinking wow. That it some amazing photography work, or that’s beautiful graffiti art etc. I would recommend this book no doubt about it, it’s a great starting off point. It shows all kinds of art within it, which I will post in picture sets below.


Cereal magazine is all for ‘Travel & Lifestyle’, this magazine gets published twice a year and is devised into city-specific chapters. With each chapter, it comprises different features on places, people and products, also this magazines is showcased with beautifully visually striking photography. An interlude section is also included in every volume, this features a selection of style, and culture articles.

Cereal magazine also offers a range of city guides, they provide the reader with a tightly edited selection of their favourite places in a variety of different cities around the world. Each of these guides is published online, and come with an introduction to the city, as-well as alongside essential information, and also features anywhere from 10-20 different locations. This city guide also comes with exclusive photography which is taken by their team, and has been laid out in an editorial style. They also produce printed guide books for select cities.
The select Cities for these guide books, are as follow:
Austin, Charlestown, Helsinki, Los Angeles, Seoul, Bath, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, New York, Singapore, Bristol, Edinburgh, London, Paris, Vancouver. 

I purchased this magazine on the 02 May, after waiting a week to buy it. I couldn’t find this magazine in other WHSmith shop, apart from the one I work in, on weekends. I first noticed this magazine however, on a shift as I was routing through design magazines to help with my work.
As I was looking I noticed the title ‘ C | E | R | E | A | L’, I quite liked the way that this was laid out and thought I would give it a quick scan through. On the front cover, it is very minimal and basic, something I think what you’d expect from a Travel and Lifestyle magazine. Underneath the title, is clearly states that this is from the travel and lifestyle genre of magazines. Also, is states that this is VOL 8, which clearly says that there is eight volumes within this type of series.
I would recommend Cereal, although it is a pricy magazine/ bookazine it is perfect.



YCN Student Annual 13/14
I got given this book as my brother was working on this book. He was on the editorial side of creating this wonderful design book. When I received it I was really intrigued as well as thinking what is it? I wasn’t knowing at the time I think of what it was that I wanted to do once I finished College. Either photography or graphic design. I was on the fence about that.
I really think that this book gave me a brilliant insight to what graphic design can do and how you can make beautiful art from it.

I do think this book is great. The colour of the book is orange and has orange pages within it, however it is on more white pages than that of the It’s Nice That Annual. I do believe that it is just the contents pages that are on the orange pages. Another reason why I really like this book is that it’s about graduate designers. It shows their work and where they studied, who they had for tutors etc. I really liked this aspect. I remember seeing some in here that went to Huddersfield University and I got excited and thought wow! They went to the place where I am going to study. It made me excited as a designer for what I could accomplish there.







Olle Eksell

Recently from a blogger called: DesignLoveFest, she was holding a competition and and the prize was a poster from the Swedish designer called Olle Eksell. If you haven’t heard of him, you should, his works is very impressive and beautiful. The prize though, was of “One Eye” 50 x 70. I loved this poster and I thought why not!
All you had to do was just say what piece of artwork you liked from Olle’s collection. I chose 3 which I found to be beautiful and as a Graphic Designer, in training I believe that having this would bring inspiration to me! I wrote that along with my post.
Then it was a waiting game really. I thought nothing of it for a few days to be honest. I thought as I’ve never won a competition before I thought “Oh well, such as life! I knew I wouldn’t win!” However, that changed my perception of competitions all-together!
I was in complete and utter shock when I got an email saying I was a potential winner! I was over the moon! I was awe-struck really. I didn’t know what to do. I responded to the email as quickly as I could.

The See Me Exposure Award Book

 Exposure Photography book!
I was super excited when this book came through the mailbox, I couldn’t believe that my own photograph was inside this book!

It is now pride of place in my little bookshelf, however I have got it back down to talk about it. 
A couple months ago back in April maybe, there was a competition from the Exposure Award, SEE ME. I was thoroughly intrigued and wanted to know more. It is obviously about photographs and at one point in my life I really wanted to be a photographer, then it changed to be in graphic design under the heading of: print, web design, typographer and book design.

What I mean is, you’re outlook on what you want to do in your life changes. 
Mine changed and I felt bad about it etc, however going back to the subject at hand. I wanted my photographs to be included in this wonderful thing. 
I sent in around 4-5 photographs that I thought would be good enough.

They sent an email back saying which one that the judges liked the most and honestly, I was thrilled. I didn’t expect anything really! They said they liked this photography of a place in Ireland which me and family went too. So I obviously took pictures to remind myself later on and remember the beautiful places where we went on our holiday.

Then it was picked to go in the photography book! They wanted to use my picture! In a book! I couldn’t believe it. I nearly cried, it was such a big achievement for me. Now when people ask what my greatest achievement is, I can say “Having one of my photographs in a book!” — it makes me feel great! Also the book is beautiful, bound in black and looks really beautiful.
 Simple, yet beautiful.

G.F Smith Papers

Welcome to The Collection
At G . F Smith, they are constantly seeking out new papers and processes, they are expanding their collections and also adding to their vast knowledge. 

Having expanded their paper collection, tested and introduced to new processes, and spent a lot of time talking to designers about selecting paper, they were delighted to present a complete overhaul of the site. Which is another, beautiful created and designed website. It looks clean and clear.

Perhaps most importantly, we’ve introduced search filters in the ‘We Recommend’ tool. You can now refine your search by a paper’s suitability for the processes you need, like that of foiling or maybe even digital printing, or you can even look at its availability in certain weights and finishes. When it’s time to look at the real thing, you’re able to easily place Sample orders through our ‘My Samples’ tool. Its quick and easy too.

I first saw about G.F Smith on Instagram surprisingly enough. I had liked a few designers work on there and when I went onto 'Search', it came up with someone I don't follow, and they had a beautiful 'book' of papers from this company. 

I had never heard of them before, however after going onto their website I became hooked on the idea of papers. I kept thinking of how to use some of the colours for work and just thinking of how nice the colours and papers looked. 

And to my surprise the book in the Instagram picture were being sent out for free. I needed to get a hold of this amazing creation. The book took 18 months the book is now ready and that it is their privilege to hand it on to you.

Paper collections are a crucial part of the designer and also a printer's work. They have spent the last 18 months creating the new Collection Book. They wanted to make it functional, that's why it has been indexed in three very beautiful ways. This is so that you can search by range, by application and / or by alphabetical order. It is very robust, so that it can withstand daily use within a very busy studio environment. They've also included every single one of their papers, as sheets rather than that of chips. This is to allow you get a true sense of the texture and the essence of the paper in question. 



Intricate 3D Sculptures Made From Books

Seattle-based artist Isobelle Ouzman carves intricate 3D illustrations into discarded books found in various places like that of dumpsters, recycling bins, and also local thrift shops. 
According to Ouzman, it was her love of reading that has inspired her to embark on this project, adding that it’s her way of making them “mean something once more.”

She’s cutting and pasting the books into layered fairy tale scenes that amaze us. Her whimsical and monochromatic environments can be purchased via her Etsy shop for around €400 per piece.
I would to be honest purchase anything that Isobelle has created, her work is visually stunning and I thought it would be worth mentioning on my blog. 

I really love creative this entire project is and how she can create someone so magical and beautiful, from something so old and decrepit. 




Above, are the beautiful images she has created from these old books, I honestly could not tell that these were from old books. I genuienley thought that these were books already available to buy on the market. I did not think for a second that they were from books that were found in a dumpster.

I suppose, that this is the very essence of art. That no matter how old something is, it can always gain life from something it was before to now. 
I think that owning one of these magnificent books would be an amazing piece to have, and to keep for a long time.

Frankie Magazine

Frankie magazine is a:
Design / Art / Photography / Fashion / Travel / Music / Craft / Home and Life magazine. 
Basically this magazine has a lot of worthy content for my contextual piece of work. I love this print magazine. I think the main reason for this love is again, it's in print. I think being able to create a print based book / magazine or comic is something magical. To be able to go out and see your own creation on sale in shops would be a joy. I also believe that print is best.

Print has a niche market, I believe that maybe not many people still buy magazines anymore, that they get them digitally to their Apple or Android devices these days, which is a shame. 
I think that printed works should be there to be cherished and to be looked at in the hands of the creator. 

With the Frankie magazine, it's a stunning magazine. It looks so aesthetic because of the pastel colours, the cover also looks really beautiful, like that of an illustration. To me, it looks like the work in "Big Eyes" which the artist is Margret Keane. 

The issue that I have is pictured above, and this is the 67 Issue and this magazine cost £6.99 in the UK. It may cost a lot however, print magazines are usually dear in price you can pay up to a tenner for a really good, beautifully designed printed magazine.
Like that of Cereal.

Every magazine or copy comes with one of two collectable art cards featuring cuteness from talented illustrator ladies Ana Albero and Ashley Ronning

This is Frankie’s first-ever fiction special, with stories from their young local writers featuring: Abigail Ulman, Favel Parrett, Nic Low, Ellen van Neerven and Alice Pung.

In the magazine they also input some pretty photos from the most floral-y place on Earth, a brief history of hand gestures (both rude and also non-rude), and an abundance of Australian abstract art. 

There are motherly musings from The Grates’ Patience Hodgson, dispatches from a country that might disappear under the sea in 50 years time, and also a chat with a lady who can make books by hand! Which sounds so incredible.

 There is also 15 handy and hygienic and unfortunate non-drinking, uses for vodka, non-sucky cards for sucky occasions, a beginner’s guide to heavy metal, fashion inspired by the most important meal of the day, David Bowie-themed craft, one disturbing reference to The NeverEnding Story and a hipster bison. Plus all the usual laughs, art, craft, travel and design goodness.

This magazine is a true divine design haven, and it is quite full of useful design based goodness. 
My favourite page within this magazine is on page 117, where it is a young woman who has created her own comic book store. Her shop is called Junky Comics and is basically 'a little comic book store that specialises in alternative comic books, zines, and art books sources both locally and from further afield.' – I think that it's a beautiful way for a young woman to promote her work and showcase her company to many people. 

BEAT by Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters magazines are more like Newspapers... 
They are in the same format as a genuine newspaper, created at the same height, and width, just with different things printed inside. 

This particular magazine by Urban Outfitters is called BEAT, and has a large image of Béyonce on the cover, wearing a red and white striped leotard with a red jumper on, and behind is an American Flag, and she looks to be in a agricultural setting.

This is Issue 16 in their collection, and it is the Winter edition for 2015, it is also a free pick up in any Urban Outfitters store, no matter where you go. I really like the Urban Outfitters magazines, as I find them to be really creative and arty. I love that they showcase brilliant design, and also the fact that there free magazines are like newspapers I think is really unique and different.

Upon Opening, you can see a beautiful vibrant image of something which doesn't almost look real, it does not look like that of a photo but of a screen print. I like the use of screen prints within their magazines as again, it makes them more unique and individual. 

This particular image is one for the Palma Violets, and no this does not mean the sweets, there is a band named after this retro sweet.

Again, whilst flicking through the use of photography is awe-inspiring. I love that the images are shot on pastel backgrounds to pack-a-punch, they look retro to me. I just think it suits to the magazine really well and does look interesting.

The use of text within the pages is very interesting too, along with the layout. 
On the following page, there seems to be an "Ask Shirley" section, which seems to me like the sort of Agony Aunt section in Women's magazines. I like this addition as it seems personal and the layout is very quirky which I really like. 

Overall, this magazine is really strong. I like that it is on paper but is in the style of a newspaper, I also like that it is print based and 'properly' print. Instead of like that of the Little White Lies book, don't get me wrong that's a beautiful piece of print work too. I just prefer how they create the Urban Outfitters one, a lot better.

Little White Lies Magazine

I really love this magazine! The magazine is called Little White Lies and this is the Issue / No 61. and it is the September / October Edition.

I purchased this magazine in London when I went for a 3 day adventure, I purchased this from a place called FOPP – which if you have no idea what that it, it's basically like a HMV except it was in London...

These magazines have a tagline and this is: TRUTH & MOVIES // I again really like this as I really like movies and find that it would be an interesting read. For this editon however, it is to do with The Crimson Peak - a new film with Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska and among others. 

The cover for this is truly stunning, as soon as I saw it I knew that I had to purchase this beautiful magazine. I had seen their other covers for various other issues. This was of George Clooney for Gravity, I believe. The image for this cover is located below:


The Crimson Peak Cover looks like this and it is utterly beautiful:


/ Honestly, I think what makes this particular cover for me sing is the use of the colours. I love the deep magentas and purples and also the use of a blue for highlighting of the candles to give an even more ghosty effect. 

Within the magazine is talks about various things this being:

Also in the magazine they have reviewed content this ranging from:
Horse Money, Interview: Pedro Costa, Mia Madre, Everest, Legend, Macbeth, Suffragette, Ex - Rent Hall Presents... The Haunted Mansion, and many, many more.

The pieces in this seem to scream, Halloween, Ghosts and all other supernatural beings. As Crimson Peak is a new film and this is also to do with Ghosts, and the presence of the Supernatural. I like that it obviously ties in with their theme. I really like that, I think that, this is a wonderful way to sell a product. 

The artwork in the magazine is really quirky and beautiful, it is like that of a comic strip. It also has a very changing art style, one piece looks like that of a Van Gough because of the lines used in the drawing. However, another looks like that of a tattoo style, which is heavily created with great uses of roses, and the colour red.

Overall this magazine is a winner in my book. It is a beautiful show case of art and writing skills, it also makes you want to read what is produced into this beautiful little book. I really think that it was created, well laid out and thought through. 

Geeky Monkey Magazine

This magazine is somewhat alien / new to me. I've never heard of this magazine until literally yesterday, I normally know quite a few niche magazines because of working at WHSmiths on the Motorway I assume that I know quite a few little magazines, however I was quite wrong.

Geeky Monkey is quite new, as this issue is only their 2nd edition however they have quite a big backing fanbase if you will. On FaceBook their page has 5,993 followers, that's pretty impressive if this is only their second ever issue! 

However the magazine is really well packed, it has literally everything that I know what I look for in a magazine, and that is: 
Movies, Games, Tech, and Comics, they other feature that they add into their magazine is toys. 

I really like the name for the magazine as it is something that you can easily remember, and it's like that saying you've heard before, "Cheeky Monkey". I really like that it was put into a context that works for their magazine identity. It's a cute play on words and again it is easy to remember, and stands out I think.

The magazine in question, as it's only the second edition is still impressive. It talks about major things that are happening right now, especially in the TV Industry, and by that I mean GoT.

If you do not know what GoT is, then let me tell you that you should know what this is by now. This is the biggest TV programme since its first episode. That of course is Game of Thrones. This has literally just started to get popular because of the TV show, however before that they were simple little books that came out in the 90's (1996 I believe...) However, no one particularly put up a fuss until now. 

As with magazines, they need catchy titles to be able to sell, like most things. This one's was to do with (SPOILER) the interesting death* of Jon Snow, a major character! Why?! Why on Earth would HBO kill off a major character?! – But wait, in the magazine it explains that 
" Exclusive
Jon Snow is Alive - Game of Thrones hasn't killed off its biggest star!" - FULLY relived. 

I really like that it was to do with something that I find to be of great interest, I'm more than half way into the first book which is A Song of Ice and Fire, which is where Game of Thrones is based off of. 

Also, including in this great magazine of which I have only just found out about, is Steve Jobs – The movie, Doctor Who, and Star Wars Battlefront amongst many more...

Overall, I really do like this magazine, they also have a website: Geeky Monkey
Again, it is mostly similar to that of their magazine however this is obviously on a web page and wouldn't set you back £4.25

DIY– Doc Martens Magazine

Upon shopping in Leeds a few weeks back I went into the Doc Martens shop to see what other wears I thought I might like to purchase. I also went with my boyfriend and he also wanted to check out their newest and latest shoes. I spotted a few Docs that I particularly liked however I had 2 week prior bought a new pair and thought today is not the day to be purchasing shoes..

My boyfriend however saw a pair that he liked and proceeded to try them on, whilst I was bored waiting for him to hurry up so I could go into another store, I remembered that Doc Martens had little magazines inside the stores for people like me, being bored whilst a family member or friend tries on there shoes.

This magazine was called DIY, and the main cover for the magazine was of a band called CHVRCHES, I adore this band! I couldn't believe that they were on the cover of this magazine. It made me want to read the magazine right there and then, so I did. This was the Issue 45, I didn't really know that there had been this many issues for a magazine that is located in the stores of Doc Martens. 

I really liked how rustic the magazine is, I wouldn't even necessarily say that it was a magazine. Maybe just a a bookazine? I'm not too sure really, but it is very interesting. The layout for the magazine is really well structured, on the first pages it shows the Doc Martens music 'festival' and who's playing and where and the dates located. On the other side is what is happening in the month of October 2015. 

This little mini magazine is really to do with music mostly, however it is still a very nice read even if you are not into the bands that they talk about within it. I was really looking forward to reading about CHVRCHES section in it. I really like their latest album and it was interesting to read upon that in the mag. 

I also really like the design too, I picked up on the layout briefly too, however the design is really interesting and is quite small, but also compact. The magazine is also rather full of content, which is mostly text with pictures, I think it is probably a 50:50 ratio of image to text.

Artist Undergoes “Torture” In Front of London Shoppers For Anti-Animal-Testing Stunt
"A 24-year-old performance artist spent ten hours being tortured in a London shop window as part of an animal rights campaign by UK-based cosmetics company Lush and Humane Society International.

Jacqueline Traide agreed to put on a flesh-coloured bodystocking and be force fed, smothered with lotions, and have her hair shaved in full view of on-lookers passing by the Lush store on Regent Street. The message of the stunt being "stop testing cosmetics on animals" (Lush is a "cruelty-free" chain)."

I remember reading about this on social media back when it was major news. I thought that it was a very interesting piece of work however really shocking at the same time. Shocking because what it being done to the woman is horrifying. I wouldn't of wanted to have volunteered to be 'tortured' for a animal rights campaign. It just seems too scary and a little far fetched but again, it does what it says. It's an ad campaign to promote that animals shouldn't be tested on. It worked. It got many people's attention.

I saw this and thought it was amazing for someone to be able create and log their conversations that they have had within a year. The graphics also used in creating this are simply stunning and very interesting. It makes you want to carry on and read more on the subject.
